Poetry Favorites

art, beauty, Fashion

Hey guys I hope you’ve all enjoyed your Holidays and have Happy New Year! I thought what’s a better way to start off the New Year than to share with you all what has helped me get though the last months of 2017. As I’ve said in my last post, the semester really took a toll on me and although I finished strong, I was pretty worn out. What has really helped me relax and get back to feeling normal is reading. Ive always love to read and one of my favorite things to do is curl up with a book and read the afternoon away. AS I’ve gotten older that has become little harder to do, but that is when I became more interested in poetry.

Ive grown a new love for poetry because of the simple fact that in so many modern poetry collections you can open it up and find just what you need. This helped me so much when I just needed little pick me up you know? Anyway, here are my picks.

Dirty Pretty things by Micheal Faudet

This collection of poems is really high on my list because I was honestly surprised at how much I liked it. This is a collection of poems mostly dealing with love and heartbreak. I will say however, there is a lot of sex and drugs in this one so if that bothers you, you might not wanna get this, I feel like it can be a hit or a miss depending on the person.

The Little Prince By Antoine de Saint-Exupéry

So I’ve always heard of this book but never looked into it much because it seemed like a children’s story.  I was kind of forced into it though because it was assigned in my literary traditions class. You guys I love it. It’s my number one pick for anyone who just needs to hear something nice. I don’t care if you buy the book, if you listen to it on audiobook or watch the movie, I think everyone needs to experience this. This one mostly focuses on love or different level, the self, friendship,

The next couple I wanna mention are by the same author who you’ve probably heard of before because basically every basic bitch lover her book and I am one of those.

Milk And Honey By Rupi Kaur

The Sun and Her Flowers By Rupi Kaur

So These two books are great together because they both tackle heavy subject matter such as abuse and heartbreak but they both end on an empowering note. They’re great because of this and everything is spoken so bluntly and plainly that it is very easy to connect to. In each the author pulls herself out of her own despair and finds herself again.

Letters to a young Poet By Rainer Maria Rilke

This isn’t as modern as other choices on my list but its still pretty good. These are a collection of letters between two colleagues that give great brief lessons on life.

Thank you everyone for reading and supporting me all throughout this year and Happy New Year to my readers old and new!

I’ve also got some excite news! Ive opened a Society6 store. Here you guys can shop my prints that I’ve had a lot of fun making throughout the semester and new ones I’ve been creating on my own. There are phone cases, travel mugs, bath rugs and much more coming soon!

Ash, Where Have you Been?

Fashion

It’s a Christmas Miracle! Im Back!

I mentioned in my previous post that school has been so busy and oh my gosh did it ramp up.

Ive just finished my first semester working in my major happy dances and it was so hard but it was so great and I’m so excited for this coming semester!

There have been so many sleepless nights and let me tell you, sleep deprivation is a real thing and it sucks. Honestly the semester took me by surprise. I know, that sounds crazy, I’m in college how did I not expect to be strung out and tired. It’s not really like thats what I Was thinking, I just think I started off with a lot on my plate and didn’t realize how difficult it would be to keep it all together as the work became more intense. Trust me it’s been crazy enough jumping into my first semester in Fashion Design, learning how rigorous the classes all are and getting a feel for the major as a whole, but then also having a minor, so doing an extra studio. Yup, that meant lots of ten hour class days. that on top of homework and work… I think you get the picture. But I had fun with every second of it. Im so thankful that I have the opportunity to learn and work in something that has interested me my whole life. All that being said I am happy the semester is over so I can rest up.

I have had a couple days to sleep all that off and am SO ready to start posting again!

I’ve got a whole lot to fill you guys in on. Ive gotten the chance to learn so many new things, get back to reading more and Ive even gotten the chance to spend the day in New York for the first time and got to visit Mood Fabrics!

Thanks for reading,

Would My Mom Wear That ?

art, Fashion

Hi Everyone, I know, long time no see! If this is your first time reading, welcome and if you’re returning, thanks for coming back!

School has been crazy, but I love it anyways. There have been long days and sleepless nights but I’m living for every moment of it! Ive really been able to get deep into my major and I’m certain this is where I was to be. Ive also learned a few things about my design style  and just some things that surprised me that I thought I might just share with you. First of all, I have to take a digital textile class. Now anyone who knows me knows that I’m not a big computer person. Sure I know my way around basic things but my no means am I a Photoshop master and up until now I was totally okay with that. I went into the classroom thinking that I’m just gonna do this class because it’s a part of what I need to do for my particular major. But as classes go by I really feel as though I have grown a deep appreciation for digital textiles. I am no longer intimidated by them and feel like I may even continue creating them on my own.

The most significant thing Id really noticed about my work in this class is that after I’m all done and looking at my work pinned up on the board, I find myself thinking, “wow my mom would love this!” “Would my mom wear that?”, or “She’d love to have a top or printed pants with what I’d made”, and that really got me thinking.

I love my mom so much, she’s the cutest little lady ever and up until now, I never really realized how much her style really influenced my own.

I would describe her style as very playful with the right amount of youth without ever looking like she’s trying to look younger than she is. Fun but sophisticated. Thats exactly the kind if style that I have been drawing from this whole time without ever knowing. As Ive been developing my own style and trying to figure out who my customer is, I feel like my mom was been helping me work through this. I feel like Im leaning toward someone just like her, super fun and a woman who unapologetically herself but is very sophisticated. Here are some prints in particular that Id made that really brought on this thought.

Along with my mom as my muse ,the striped floral ad smiling floral patterns I was inspired by Laura Klaman’s Gilded Tongue on show in the contemporary wing of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, along with classic realistic paintings in nature. Here, I h was trying to mix the rigidity of metals without he soft and naturalness of flowers, especially painted in a watercolor style. The striped chain pattern was more inspired by Gucci and ideas of the beach and wanting to see this print on a garment that was soft, luxurious and breezy.

Boston Fashion Week!

art, beauty, Fashion, Hair

Hey everyone, last Saturday I got the awesome opportunity to work with VOGE FashionRunway for Boston Fashion Week hosted by Bree Scullark, America’s Next Top Model Cycle 17 contestant and actress on CSI, and Joshua Steele! The event was hosted at the W Hotel in Boston. If you’re wondering, yes I got to talk to Bree, she was super nice even though it was only for a  minute.

It was tons of fun getting to meet designers and models  and just being able to surround myself with so much creativity. I wanna thank my friends Nadia and Julia again for inviting me and providing this amazing experience for me and all of my other friends who were able to intern as well.  Most of all I have to give a HUGE thank you to the creators of VOGE Fashion Runway ,Rose and Junior Vipent for letting me help make this night a success. You can check out my friends blogs Julia and Jackie, who interned as well.

I was working in the makeup, hair and model room letting the models know when to get ready and making sure that all the first were ready to go on stage. I thought this was the perfect thing for me to do because it’s provides a first hand look at what it’s really like back stage during a show. It was chaotic at first trying to make sure all the first who were walking for the first few designers were all ready to go in their first looks but of course it died down soon enough.

I was so fun being able to be just thrown int the mix and having to figure out how to make it all work. I loved being around everyone and all of the energy.“”“”
Here are all the designers who were showcased that night (in no particular order) and some of their work. All of the pieces were beautiful and I have to congratulate each and every designer for all their hard work and dedication to their craft. It was great being able to be around established designers living out their dreams. Everyone their is such an inspiration to all young up and coming designers. The show was a success and it was all due to these talented people and their amazing bodies of work.

There are a few different pics I could snag in between working and there is even a model in here that I got to do the makeup for 2 minutes before she had to be on stage!

What I wore: Of course I was in head to toe black(and gold for the added bougie)

Top:Gap: black long sleeve cold shoulder sweater

Bottom:Gap: black ripped jeans

Jacket:H&M: Faux leather biker jacket

Shoes:Marshalls: black suede mules with gold accents

Jewelry: gold necklace set from Bass I know it’s hard to see but one is a feather and the other had marble details and I also had on oversized pearls.

Boston Fashion Week+OOTD

Fashion

Hi everyone! Ive got some exciting news! I a currently interning for VOGEFashionRunway for Boston Fashion Week! I just wanna give a huge thank you to my friends Julia and Nadia who had invited me to help them out with the show. Also, Julia has an awesome Fashion blog as well calles callmejulessite so everyone reading should defiantly check her out!

On Sunday I attended a meeting to learn my jobs for the day of the show.  Me and all my other friends got super cute, as seen below, and headed down to the W Hotel where the show will be hosted on Saturday, October 7th. See all the show details in their Facebook here.

Ya’ll can catch ya girl in the model room and makeup and hair. I had a great few hours meeting everyone and getting to work closely with designers and models. The designer that I was assigned to was awesome and you guys can check out her great work on instagram here.

What I wore:

Honestly this is really a show of how much I appreciate Marshalls and TJMaxx because Everything I wore that way and from one of these stores. Ive been shopping and Marshall’s and TJMaxx more often lately not only because they are easily accessible and Afforsable for me and my college kid pennies, but they are also pretty ethical. Many times Marshalls and TJ Maxx will pick up smaller American made brands and I can really appreciate that.

I  tried to keep my outfit simple and pretty comfortable (minus the heels but they were cute so Kanye shrug).

My top is this Doe and Rae, black and white stripped top with a chiffon-ish overlay. It is also slightly off the shoulder so it makes it a little bit more fun.

Next I wore my favorite navy slacks. These are Ellane Rose and they were so comfortable. They’ve got a good amount to strength so they kind of fit like a legging but the fabric feels sturdy like real pants and the bottom isn’t as tight.

And finally I have my shoes, which are Nine West. They are a absolutely adorable pair of baby pink suede and paisley printed chunky heels. I think these are great and easy to dress up of down because of how thick the heel is. These were by far my favorite part of my outfit even though by the end of the day after running around Boston I couldn’t wait to fling them across the room.

Check back soon to hear about my experiences backstage, see pictures, and learn more about the designers!

How to Style: Wide Leg Trousers

art, beauty, Fashion, Hair

Hey Everyone , I really like making these kinds of post so here’s another one. I get a lot of questions from my friends and just people around me about how I chose what I wear and how I’ve developed my own personal style. So I think I’ll start posting about how I personally like to style certain pieces that I love.

So, I’m gonna start off with these Trousers. I love these because they’re perfect for summer. We’re right at the tale end of summer So I’m still feeling the no jeans thing a lot. I wholeheartedly believe that we should just give up on tight fitting pants during the even slightly warmer months. Just thinking about trying to squeeze my thighs into some skin tight skinny jeans is making me break a sweat and want to just give up!

Instead I prefer wearing lots of breezy loser fitting outfits that can still be quite flattering. These floor length black wide leg pants are from Forever 21and I’ve literally had these for years now. While I am talking about Forever 21, I will be talking about fast fashion brands in these posts because that is where I had previously purchased these pieces but I no longer support those companies. If you guys would like me to talk a little more about why that is and what I am choosing to do as an alternative option for shopping  please feel free to leave a comment!

I chose to pair these pants with my white T shirt that has this beautiful mandala print and sheer back and some classic Adidas shell toe sneakers. I love this outfit so much because its super comfy and you can easily look really it together with barely trying. It feels like I’m wearing pj’s!  Its so cute and comfy with little bit of an urban edge added by my sneakers and I think this is my most favorite kind of style to wear. I also accessorized this outfit with some simple large silver  beaten hoops and tied my second set of locs in a pony tail.

Anyways, this is my little how to style I think id like to share my style knowledge a little more with you guys and I want to remind you all that you don’t need to spend a ton of money o clothes to look stylish and to feel good about yourself. you just need to think a little differently about your pieces in your closet and know that each piece is an individual building block that can made so many different looks. I hope you enjoyed reading, till next time,

(If you’re looking at my decor, I’ll be posting my back to school room haul soon 🙂

How to get your curls back in check!

Fashion

Easy curl masks to restore dry hair after long protective styling!

We all know protective styling is a must to keep hair of kinkiest textures growing and healthy. They’re a great way to prevent breakage and retain length. It is very important to maintain your hairs health both during and after the style is removed.

All though we all know we should be taking are of our hair health while it’s in the style we don’t always follow our regimen quite as strictly because of course these styles are also meant to be convenient.

I’ve had my crochet faux locs in for a little over a month now and I think they’ve run their course. I figured that my hair probably needed alittle pick me up after this style so I’m here to show you guys alittle hair treatment that I think will really help!

So the things you will need are:

    • coconut milk

    • honey

This is literally so easy all you do is take out the milk from the can and mix it till it’s even, then just add some honey to the milk, about 2 table spoons of so. Then mix and apply thoroughly to the hair.

Let that sit in the hair for about 30 min under a cap or even longer if you feel your hair is more damaged.

Then all you’ve gotta do is rinse, you should have moisturized, shined curls that smell great too!

Simple Easy Style Tips and OOTD

Fashion

Hey everyone so I’m starting a style series and I wanted to show you a trend that I’ve really been getting into lately.

I finally found myself the perfect pair of black suede mules and I just wanted to give a few of my tips on how to style them because I know at first glance they look hard to pull off.

Keep it simple

This is my motto for anything. These are easily a classy, but still trendy shoe , and trying to wear tons of other trends at once will make you look like you’re trying way too hard to be in style. I would always advise that if you’re tying to wear these and look in style but also effortless, still to basic colors and add maybe a pop of color.

So here’s an outfit that I styled around my shoes. I kept it simple and wore a black long sleeve body suit from Forever 21, and a pair of flowy shorts with a chain design that I got literally years ago from JCPenny. I love body suits because they’re super simple and give the illusion of having your shirt tucked into your pants which automatically makes you look a little more put together.Because Ive had these shorts for about 5 years now, ‘Im always trying to find new ways to wear them and the more simple you are sometimes them better, and this is a super simple, easy to put on and overall COMFY outfit to spent he day in without looking like you just rolled out of bed, even though ya probably did.

I also just used my watermelon Micheal Kors bag just because that’s what I’ve been using everyday so that along with the gold accent on my shorts count as my pop of color. I also accessorize with some super simple got hoops that I wear literally all the time. A good thing to remember is that less is always more when it comes to jewelry. If you’re wearing large earrings, opt for a smaller necklace or even no necklace at all, as I did. Lastly I pulled my hair into a slick bun.
